VMware as an abstraction layer may not be that far off
Could it be that VMware becomes the new middleware for the OS?
A layer between the hardware and OS could drastically reduce the complexity of upgrades and help to future proof a changing environment.
Here is the case, add a layer of virtualization in a 1:1 ratio of operating system to hardware and it could help with the upgrades in the future. By adding this additional layer in between makes it much easier to replace the underlining hardware platform in the future by helping reduce the reliance outdated hardware. This can be seen as a large advantage for changing environments and environments undergoing a server refresh.Simply move the VM image to a new and updated server and skip the OS +App build from scratch.
The truth is in the CAPEX and OPEX, every company is different and every solution is different. Does it cost you more money on building server or replacing hardware, how often do you refresh and how drastic are the changes in the environment.
