Moving your “My Mucic” and “My Pictures” locations in Vista

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Moving form XP to Vista changes some day to day tasks along with structure of data beneath the GUI.

So what happens if you have thousands of music files that you would like referenced from you’re “My Music” and your partition for you OS is not that large? Say

you just went on a vacation and returned with thousands of new images that you would like to have on an external drive not to fill up your laptop with all of the

photos .. what do you do?

Here’s how to relocate any of the folders in your profile….

1) Navigate to the drive that you would like to use for the new location and create the directory structure. I:\Music or I:\Pictures
2) Click on Start and click the bodl user name at the top right in the Start menu. This will open your profile editor.
3) Right click the icon for the property that you would like to edit. Documents, My Music and so on … Choose properties.
4) On the location tab click on the button Move (middle button)
5) You can then select the location that you have previously created.
6) Click select folder and return to the location tab – click OK and you will be presented with a conformation if you really want to do this … select yes.
7) Your done!

That’s it – all you have to do to move your locations of My Music and other folders. This is a great way to map large amounts of data from other locations and

drives to your my Docs folder for backup and/or just piece of mind.

Time Management 101

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Can I become a happier person with better time management?

clocks[1] Wow - Recently I have really felt the pinch of time.  I have lists and lists multiple pages and tablets deep that acquire new tasks faster than I can remove them.

I am a list person - I have lists for things I need to do today, this week, month and year.  I have lists breaking my day down by how long I expect the task to take so I can fit it into a time slot when I have a free moment.  I have systems to determine long term goals and dependent tasks. I have lists created for things I must pick up next time I go to the store grouped by how close the stores are and what time I have available. I have sliced and diced things so many ways in search for the perfect solution more times than I can count. Excessive – possibly .. but our success is so often tied to time. Success of a relationship, carrier, friendship and overall wellbeing.

I have been working on a better overall time management involving breaking down my time into “goals” first. Picking three goals from my overall yearly goals (work related) … Breaking the goals down into objectives .. breaking the objectives into milestones and breaking the milestones back into tasks. In the mean time I am also using the Drucker time management assessment process for the next three weeks to better align my time with my tasks. You can find more info about Drucker here http://www.friendly-ware.com/dtm/whyShldCr.htm

Time management is not a new concept to me or will this be my last attempt to find a better model.

Peter Drucker “The output limits of any process are set by the scarcest resource. In the process we call “accomplishment”, this is time … Of the other major resources, money is actually quite plentiful … People … one can hire. But one cannot rent, hire, buy or otherwise obtain more time.”

More to come …

Personal Software Inspector (PSI) - Secunia

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

The Secunia PSI detects installed software and categorizes your software as either Insecure, End-of-Life, or Up-To-Date. Effectively enabling you to focus your attention on software installations where more secure versions are available from the vendors.

I had a friend of mine send this over to me after we talked briefly about a potential security issue.  It seems like a great tool.  The tool is still in beta form but worth taking a look at.

Secunia offers the following:
* On Line Inspection
* Personal
* Network

We are currently running a test on an old test box to see how well it does.  I will post the results when it completes.

Thanks Bartosz!

Delayed: Windows Server 2008 - until Q1 2008?

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

PC World reports:

Microsoft Wednesday again delayed the release of Windows Server 2008, saying development of the software could take as long as another three months beyond its previously planned December release.

Unfortunately this causes delays in Windows Server Virtualization or WSV.

Microsoft’s Snell says the Windows Server 2008 slip will affect the ship dates of the Windows Server Virtualization (WSV) add-on for Windows Server 2008, but not the framework of its release. She says the plan is still to have a WSV beta available at the RTM of Windows Server 2008 and to ship the virtualization software within 180 days of that milestone. “The end dates may have changed, but the parameters have not changed,” she says.

Snell also says Microsoft will ship a release candidate of Windows Server 2008 in the next few weeks and possibly might have a second release candidate by the end of the year. A release candidate signals the final round of beta testing before development is completed.

So what’s this mean to us? Hopefully a much better product over this years Windows Vista Release which reminds me of Windows ME.

Personally I am very excited to put the MSV through some real world tests and traffic.   I have a feeling many people are waiting on this release of virtualization to roll their environment.

On A side note, Watch out for Citrix - they are up to something and its going to be big!  They have been buying up businesses left and right in the virtualization space and they want to be in your data center!  BAD!

Default Password Lists / Factory Defaults

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Possibly the most complete list of default passwords I have ran across.

The Default Password List is a collection of accounts and passwords that are, by default, the initial passwords for specific accounts on a given computer system. Sometimes these passwords are installed out-of-box, sometimes they are automatically installed by software, and sometimes they are installed by consultants that are brought in to perform services. This list should be used as a resource for computer security consultants interested in testing the security configuration of equipment.

Here is the link: http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html

I realize this is not the only list, rather a list that I found useful.
